Why Southwold Is a Perfect Base for Runners This Spring

Nestled on the stunning Suffolk Coast, Southwold is one of the UK’s most charming seaside towns — and a brilliant getaway for runners of all abilities. With its mix of flat coastal runs, scenic trails, welcoming community events and easy access to countryside routes, it’s an ideal spot to stay for the Southwold Half Marathon on 1 March 2026.

Ready for Southwold Half Marathon

The Southwold Half is a gorgeous 13.1 mile route starting and finishing on the promenade, taking in the best of Southwold and neighbouring Walberswick’s coastal scenery. It’s perfect for runners chasing a PB or simply soaking up a beautiful spring race atmosphere. Places have sold out for 2026, although there are still some charity places available.

If you’ve already secured your place, there is still time to book one of our holiday cottages and get £41 off your stay and late check-out on race day! Just use code RUN24 at checkout!
However, if you’ve missed out on a spot, Southwold is still a fantastic spot for runners throughout the year.

Scenic Running Routes Right on Your Doorstep

Promenade and Beachfront Runs

Start your run right from Southwold’s picturesque promenade: flat, paved paths along the North Sea make for beautiful early-morning or sunset runs. It’s perfect for easy miles, interval work or tempo sessions along the beach with lighthouse views.

Southwold ↔ Walberswick Routes

Just a short distance from town, routes between Southwold and Walberswick offer a mix of terrain and scenery: coastal paths, riverside tracks along the River Blyth, marshland stretches and charming village backdrops. These are popular with locals and visitors alike for longer runs or exploratory jogs.

Longer Trail Adventures

For trail lovers, segments of the Sanderlings Walk (a long-distance path linking Ipswich to Southwold through heathland and forests) offer beautiful undulating terrain for longer training sessions or weekend runs.

Nature Reserve Routes

Just inland from Southwold, the Hen Reedbeds and Dingle Marshes areas (part of the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve) provide quieter routes through diverse habitats, perfect for exploration runs or cool-downs after a long day.

Parkruns to Visit

While Southwold doesn’t host its own parkrun, there are several fantastic events nearby that make great Saturday morning outings for visiting runners. All events are free, friendly and open to all abilities (walk, jog, run or volunteer) — with typical start times of 9.00am on Saturdays.

Local parkruns worth exploring:

• Lowestoft parkrun – A two-lap course in front of the colourful beach huts. This was voted the most picturesque parkrun in the UK, so don’t miss out on this opportunity!
• Sizewell parkrun – Coastal and trail-style route blending firm paths and beachside scenery.
• Felixstowe parkrun – Single-lap seaside course on tarmac paths.
• Thomas Mills parkrun – Two-lap course across playing fields and farm land at Thomas Mills school in Framlingham, just moments from the historic castle.
• Kesgrave parkrun – Two-lap grass course just outside Ipswich.
• Alton Water parkrun – A two-lap trail route that starts and finishes near a highland cow enclosure at the Alton Water reservoir.

These make lovely add-ons to a weekend stay.
