Hooked: Where to Eat Fish and Chips in Southwold
One of the great joys of any getaway is discovering delicious local food and drink. And if you’re visiting Southwold, fish and chips might well be on the top of your list. All our Southwold Holiday Cottages are within walking distance of somewhere serving up fish and chips, and even if you’re staying in Reydon or Walberswick, you haven’t got far to go for a taste of the Suffolk coast.
Whether you like to enjoy them on the beach, straight from the paper, or you’re after a traditional pub supper, we’ve netted some of the best Southwold has to offer.

Traditional
The Little Fish and Chip Shop (and Sole Bay Fish Company)
Where: 2 East Street or Black Shore, Southwold Harbour
Tucked on East Street, The Litte Fish and Chip Shop is within walking distance of the promenade and beach. Cooked the traditional way in beef dripping, they offer lots of fish choices aside from the classics, including plaice, skate and dover sole. With fancy buzzers to alert your when your order is ready, you can even wait in your car on a drizzly day!
The team also serve up fish and chips from their Sole Bay Company hut down by Southwold Harbour. So you can enjoy your dinner with water-side views across to Walberswick and beyond.
Southwold Fish and Chips
Where: 32 High Street
Right on the High Street, the waft of salt and vinegar lures in many passing by Southwold Fish and Chips. You can enjoy the classic combinations as well as handy children’s meals, and they even have large bottles of vinegar and tartare sauce to take back to your holiday cottage.
Mrs T’s Fish and Chips
Where: Blackshore, Southwold Harbour
Down by Southwold Harbour, Mrs T’s Fish and Chips has been frying since 1987. You can tuck into your fish and chips right in front of the harbour-side hut, enjoying the view across the river and envious looks from passers-by. Want to try something different? They also serve up salt and pepper squid and traditional saveloy.

Just a short stroll from the seafront, Coasters is a cosy, modern restaurant who pride themselves on carefully sourced ingredients and friendly service. You can enjoy their fish and chips from the comfort of the main restaurant or even in the quirky new beach hut pods outside!
Harbour Inn
Where: Black Shore, Southwold Harbour
The Harbour Inn is a proper fisherman’s pub. Run by the Adnams brewery, The Harbour Inn is full of charm and serves up a classic pub fish and chips. Located by the water and with views both over the river and across the Common to Southwold, it’s a great spot to sit and enjoy your fish supper.
The Pickled Kipper
Where: 51 High Street
Located on the High Street, The Pickled Kipper is for those who want a twist on the classic fish and chips. In their quirky cafe you can tuck into Suffolk Smokies (think cheesy, smoky fish pie), mackerel pate, salmon and prawn salad and a full fisherman’s plate for a bit of everything. Look out for their Seafood Suppers during peak season.
